The Lung Function Supplements That Must Be Part Of Your List

By Janine Hughes

The lungs have a primary role in life, just as important as the heart, the brain, and other vital organs. In fact, the easiest way to cut off life from any living organism is to interfere with airflow into the lungs. Generally, they are used to enrich the blood with oxygen rich air and clear the poisonous carbon dioxide from the tissues. The air breathed in sometimes consists of pollutants; particularly the smog, smoke and other chemicals. This greatly hinders its optimal functioning, and can sometimes cause a total breakdown leading to bacterial infections and other infections like influenza and asthma. In order to counter this, lung function supplements have been developed to promote its optimal operation.

The most effective and commonly used natural supplement is the mullein. It has been used for centuries, and has active ingredients that are said to effectively fight bacteria and influenza that causes infections in the respiratory tissues. It has also been used to treat bronchitis and asthma, among other respiratory diseases. It is approved by the FDA as a safe food additive.

It is most commonly taken as tea. For this, one tablespoon of dry mullein leaves mixed with one cup of boiling water is recommended per day. However, before taking the tea, it should be allowed to steep for at least 10 minutes, before straining. However, if it is to be used for treating the respiratory infections, then the recommended dosage is 3 cups per day.

Horebound is another widely used supplement for the same purpose. Lozenges and candies are commonly made from horebound, and are used to manage cough. It has expectorant properties that enable it to treat cough, cold, sore throat, and asthma in addition to several other respiratory diseases. The other commonly used natural supplements for lungs include the licorice, fenugreek, and the slippery elm among others.

The vitamins and minerals also play a very vital role in keeping the lungs operating optimally. This partly explains why a daily dosage of multivitamin nutrients rich in minerals is recommended. Vitamin E in particular is very important, as it helps clear the cell membrane of its residence, which help protect the lung cells from the harms that are caused by pollen grains, smoke, smog, and all other chemicals inhaled.

Research findings about non-smokers put the risk of getting cancer among those taking Vitamin E supplements at 50 percent less than those not taking it at all. The dosage normally recommended is 600 IU per day.

The other important vitamin is vitamin C. Thanks to its potent properties, it is an antioxidant. However, it is only beneficial if the use restricts to the right dosage. 200 mg per day gives the best results, better than dosage above or below the recommended 200 mg.

There are several supplements available in the market, the majority now sold on the online shops. As such, the search should start from these sites. More important, though, each of these supplements is unique in their own ways. As such, it is important to search for information in regards for each particular product. Secondly, the doctor must be involved before resorting to any given product so that they do not cause complication or any unpleasant side effects.
