Upper Klamath Lake, also called Klamath Lake, is a freshwater lake located in Oregon. The large, shallow body of water is located east of Cascade Range in the south-central portion of the state. Its surface area makes it the largest body of fresh water in Oregon. Organic Klamath blue green alge has become a popular topic among those interested in natural health.

Aphonizomenon flos-aquae is the technical name for the algae that the lake produces. It is much like spirulina and chlorella, although there are many differences worth noting. A lot of folks talk about the benefits that come with utilizing this algae.

Grown in most other places, aphanizomenon flos-aquae is considered toxic. However, that which is grown in Klamath Lake is known for being pure and free of these toxins. This makes it available for ingestion by humans and there is plenty of it that grows in this region.

It is estimated that thousands of kilograms are harvested from the lake every year. Most of it is sourced out to clients that deal in supplements. In summer months, the growth is so robust that the lake itself turns green in color. The native fish of the lake usually die off because the algae sucks oxygen from the water.

There is a lot of information out there about the potentially powerful health benefits of this substance. However, there is not much solid evidence to support those claims. This algae is believed to suppress tumors, enhance immune systems and serve as a plant source of the B12 vitamin. Like all other algaes, it has high amounts of iron, phytonutrients and protein.

It also features a lot of phycocyanin. The algae is actually said to have higher amount of the compound than all other food sources. Spirulina is known for having approximately five percent of this, but the Klamath Lake algae has three times that at approximately 15 percent. Phycocyanin is a natural antioxidant that forms in cyanobacteria. This is believed to reduce inflammation present in the body, as well as oxidative stress.

As there is not evidence to prove the claimed benefits, the substance should be used with caution. Not many studies have been performed on this substance and so there are plenty of skeptics. The recommendation is that people consult with a professional from the health field before taking this type of supplementation. This may be not work well for all people so starting slow is a good option.

A lot of health companies have this available in the form of a pill or powder supplement. It might include only the algae or other natural substances that work well with it. The cost for these goods will range considerably and may related to the retailer. Generally, they are not cheap.
