Trends Relating To Botox

By Ariel Mernal

The public is well aware that having botox treatments is a simple and easy solution to make the skin appear younger. Wrinkles and fine lines in the face become quite a big concern for ageing people, so many of them are utilizing the latest advances in cosmetic treatments, and that means getting botox injections. Botox may have been considered to be a procedure that would come and go, however the skeptics now see that this is not true, it's going to be around for a while.

You may have read about it in the news or even seen it on television - more and more celebrities are now using botox injections to maintain their young looks and skin. But the question on many people's mind is 'why is it so popular?' or 'what makes it such a sought after procedure?'

Well, the answer is simple really. People realize that botox is low-cost, and works well to make the skin look younger. Unlike plastic surgery, there are no scars after the procedure, it's low-cost, and it takes only a few minutes to have done. Celebrities have made botox a household name, and because of this, many more people are now choosing to undergo these treatments.

Do Men get Botox?

Many people think that botox is only something that women are interested in, but this is not true. The truth is to the contrary. Even though the procedure is more often performed on women, men are getting botox treatments more often nowadays. Media outlets have come up with a term for this, and 'bro-tox' seems to fit the bill. In some areas, men are accounting for about half of the botox injections that they administer.

Changing trends

The use of botox is rising. By some reports, the overall increase in botox treatments between 2010 and 2011 rose 5%, up to 5.7 million patients from 5.4 million the year before. Newer estimates suggest an annual rise of around 10% every year. This rising trend should come as no surprise. The previously attached 'stigma' and social attitude to botox injections being the treatment reserved for the wealthy no longer exists, and neither does any sense of any shame of undergoing the procedure. It has now become a well recognized and widely accepted surgical procedure.

But that's not all. Not only are botox treatments used to help those who have cosmetic issues, they are used for muscle spasticity disorders as well. Children and adults who suffer from cerebral palsy have had botox help them, as well as those who have blepharospasm and also conditions such as spastic paraparesis. Results have been promising and outcomes have been excellent. Other applications include managing patients with migraine (multiple botox injections are given to the scalp) and excessive sweating.

We can all speculate with certainty that botox is only going to rise in acceptance in time. There are always new studies being done and improvements being made, and the benefits of these treatments seem to be growing in number all the time.
