Chemical Peels for Treating Acne

By Marlene Ataine

Practically all teenagers suffer from acne at one time or another, but sometimes it's only a few 'zits' or pimples. For other teenagers however, acne can be more severe, and give rise to spots called whiteheads, blackheads, or larger red, inflamed spots called cysts in more severe cases. These skin pimples, spots and cysts can change the tone of the skin, leaving a darker tone and severe acne can in some cases leave scarring.

It can leave scars, but acne is not dangerous. The pores (tiny holes) in human skin are connected to oil glands underneath it. Follicles are like small canals that connect the pores to the glands. Sebum is an oily liquid produced by these glands. Dead skin cells are brought to the surface of the skin by the sebum carrying them through the follicles. A small hair grows through the follicle out of the skin. Pimples grow when these follicles get blocked, resulting in an accumulation of oil under the skin. During puberty, hormonal changes can cause excess oils in the skin, so acne is common in teenagers. Later in life, adults can suffer from acne too, not just during the teenage years.

A hypersensitivity or overproduction of androgens (male hormones) is the cause of some adult acne. When both male and female hormones (estrogen) are imbalanced, it also results in a breakout. This can happen during a woman's pregnancy, perimenopause, or menopause. Sometimes acne is also encouraged by certain medications, such as corticosteroids, or even cosmetics.

Chemical peels are a very good treatment for mild and moderate adult acne. By exfoliating the skin, chemical peels take effect; dirt is cleansed from the skin, and dead skin cells which are clogging the pores are removed. This causes fewer acne pimples and spots to form. In addition, chemical peels can take away some of the uneven skin tone and skin discolouration that acne causes.

Chemical peels are a very cost effective option for acne treatment. For acne, they are also a very safe treatment. The top layers of the skin are exfoliated and cleansed by superficial chemical skin peels that remove all the dead skin cells. A course of six peels, spaced apart by one week minimum, is usually recommended. A reduction in the amount of acne breakouts will be noticeable, and skin texture will improve too.

For your chemical peel acne treatment, make sure to approach a credible skin care clinic. It is important to consult a reputable clinic to obtain advice on how the chemical peel treatment will benefit your skin type, before embarking on treatment with chemical peels for acne.
